Question: May the Peace, Blessings and Mercy of Allah (swt) be with you.

I have written some poems and for some time many people have said that I need to publish them. I have written them as a means of expressing my inner feelings which are deep and sometimes very raw. I am now in a place where I feel I can share them with the world but unsure where to start. Please can you give me some advice.

While some writers make a dollar per article writing for content mills, others make a dollar per word writing for high-end magazines and other publications. A thousand bucks for a thousand words is a reality for many writers, and it can be your reality, too. The BIG BOOK of High-Paying Markets, a new Kindle e-book by Amel S. Abdullah, will show you how.

  1. Asalam alaykum waramatullah wabarakatuh,
You can start by posting them some on Instagram or Tumblr. Then as you get more visibility, you can compile them into a book to be published. I’ve seen this occur with poets on Instagram. Barakallahu fihi.

  2. As-salamu Alaykum,

Thank you for sharing these ideas, Sister Amina.

The nice thing about Instagram is that you can create visually appealing posts that are more likely to get shared by others.

You could even take this a step further to create posters, bookmarks, and other artwork for people to purchase.

I would also suggest starting a website where people can read your work and comment on it.

Many publications, including literary websites and magazines, publish poetry. There are also many contests out there, including some that are run by Islamic groups and organizations.

You just need to look around for the right venues.

Try connecting with other poets as well for inspiration and ideas.

You are a lot braver than I am, by the way. I have written exactly one poem in recent months and don’t think I will be sharing it any time soon!
